Angelica came to the UK from Italy, to stay with a host family and attend the local high school. When she first came to the UK, her aim was to improve her language skills – but she ended up experiencing so much more than just that. Angelica became more independent, experienced a different culture, and became part of a new family!
At the beginning, things were difficult – everything was so different to back home. But soon enough, Angelica started making friends and enjoying school, and she got on really well with her host family. She went on lots of trips and got to visit a lot of new places. Her natural family and her host family even made friends and spent New Years Eve together! She’s also had the opportunity to consider her future options, including going to university.
Aldo, an Italian student, came to the UK to stay with a host family and attend high school. He was nervous to arrive in the UK and meet his host family – just as the family were nervous and excited to meet him. But he ended up doing so well, and enjoying his experience so much, that he extended his stay and then went on to study at university in the UK as well!
Aldo enjoyed his time at school and made some great friends, and he sat his A levels while he was in the UK. He got great results – making his host family very proud – and he became a true part of their family along the way. They went through ups and downs together, and they supported each other through the journey. Now that he’s at university, thankfully he isn’t too far from his host family, so they still get to see him often!
If you want to really become immersed in local culture, get a taste for life in a UK high school, and have a truly immersive experience, then our High School Immersion programme is perfect for you! You can choose to live with a welcoming host family or, if you prefer to be more independent, you can stay in halls of residence with others students.

Our High School Select programme lets you choose which college you wish to study at. At StudyChoice we work with over 30 colleges, located all over the UK. This means we are in a great position to find the perfect college for each and every one of our students, including you. With StudyChoice it is all about you. We want you to have the best year of your life, the best possible experience.
Check out a couple of our colleges here – and let us find the perfect college for you!
Exeter College – we work with this award-winning, world class further education college, which is located in Devon (in the south of England). They have achieved a rating of “outstanding” from Ofsted (the governmental department which inspects schools). Whether you want to study a course such Computer Science or French, or anything in between, Exeter College has a wide variety of options. This college is also home to training facilities for sports and music, as well as other specialist areas.
Bexhill College – we work with this well-established and respected sixth form college. They offer a lot of support for students, and they have a range of specialist resources to help you succeed! Here, you would have the chance to take part in trips and join in extra-curricular activities such as sports, drama and music. At Bexhill College, you can study academic courses with excellent tutors, with a great variety of options available.
If you choose to stay with a welcoming host family, you will become part of a British family! You’ll experience daily life with them, sharing in meals and taking part in activities. This is a really wonderful opportunity to not only improve your English, but also to experience British culture and make friends and memories for life.
Your host family might also choose to host another student as well, in which case you would have the opportunity to learn about other cultures and languages, and make international friends.
We want you to always feel supported, and we are here to help and guide you. Our support team are dedicated and experienced, and will always be here if you need advice. As well as this, if you are living with a host family then you will also have a Local Support Coordinator who lives in your local area and knows your surroundings, and they will be there for you as well.
Yes – if you choose the High School Select programme, then you can choose not only the area that you will be in, but also the school or college you will study at! We want you to be able to study where and what you want – so you can tell us in your application if you have a preference. Take a look at our High School Select page to find out more about this.
Yes – if you choose the High School Academic programme you can choose your subjects!
Yes – but this might depend on your academic performance, and the subjects that you choose to study. At the end of your time in the UK, you should obtain a report card from your school or college, and this will demonstrate your experience and qualifications.
If you are interested in sitting exams, then you should tell us this when you apply, so that we can make sure your subjects will allow you to obtain a recognised qualification.
As soon as your placement is confirmed, we will notify you of the details of where you will be studying. The process of matching you with the perfect school or college (and host family, if you choose to stay with one) takes time and can be complex, and we want to make sure we find you the best match. We’ll aim to let you know your destination a few months before you depart.
It’s different for every student depending on your lifestyle, and it also depends on whether you stay with a host family or in student accommodation, and how you travel to school! The average monthly expenditure is usually between £100-£150 if you’re staying with a host family.
On our application form, there is a section asking you for some information about yourself – this includes whether you would be happy living with pets, whether you would prefer a non-smoking family, and if you have any other special requirements or allergies, among other questions. You should give us as much information as you can on here, and this will enable us to match you to the most suitable family!
This depends and can be different depending on the school and the host family! There will probably be other exchange students at your school. Host families can choose to host one or two students, so you might have another student within your host family.
If you have a problem with your host family, then you can talk to your Local Support Coordinator. They will help you to talk about the problem and find a solution. If the problem is serious and can’t be resolved, there can be the option of changing host family.
All of our students and their parents will have a contact person before, during and after their stay. During the programme, our students are supported by various levels of support – our Head Office team, their school and (depending on what type of programme you have chosen) a Local Support Coordinator. We also have an emergency number for emergencies out of office hours. StudyChoice will keep in touch with you while you’re here in the UK, and we can offer support, guidance and advice.
Yes – StudyChoice organises tours and trips every term that you will be able to take part in! Independent travel is also possible, but you will have to get permission from StudyChoice, as well as your natural parents (and host family, if you’re staying with one!).
Yes – there will be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved in sports and activities while you are in the UK! You can join a club or play sports through your school or college, and if you’re staying with a host family, they will be able to help you get involved in activities in the local area.
Yes – you can ask for an extension of your programme.
If you aren’t sure if you will need a visa, take a look at the UK government website:
This will tell you what kind of visa you need to apply for, what fees are involved, and what the requirements are. The earliest you can apply for a visa is three months before you start your course.
